Requirements for Earning LPN/LVN to RN Degrees
While licensed practical nurses (LPN) and licensed vocational nurses (LVN) provide basic nursing care to an ever-growing population, the need for existing LPN and LVN professionals to become registered nurses (RN) has increased. In many cases, existing LPNs and LVNs have knowledge gained through practical application that can be utilized in the completion of an RN degree. Someone with only a diploma in nursing can take a bridge program to earn an associate’s or bachelor’s degree and become an RN. These programs include coursework in anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, patient care, mental health nursing, and multi-system nursing care, among other topics.

The nursing occupation continues to be one of the most sought-after and fastest-growing fields today. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the RN field will grow by about 26 percent between 2010 and 2020 – faster than most professions. In terms of salary, RNs can expect a median annual salary of $64,690 (BLS.gov).
Job Duties of a Registered Nurse
The most common job settings for credentialed registered nurses include:
- General medical and surgical hospitals (public and private)
- Physicians’ offices
- Home health care facilities
- Nursing care facilities
Registered nurses serve to make the patient’s quality of life easier while en route or following hospitalization or other necessary care situation. Registered nurses will be expected to work with a team of physicians and other healthcare specialists to administer – through medication, surgery or other method – proper treatment and “nurse” a patient back to optimum health.
